Cousins from William Hender and Elizabeth Rowe

compiled and annotated by Don R. Hender

William Hender had recieved a sum money from his father Thomas Hender's will of 1791-1794. A part of that sum was likely used to secure an aprenticeship as a clock and watchmaker of likely Uglow of Camelford suggested by one source? He settled near Stoke Climsland of Callington where with his own will and the records presented on the 'Callington Heritage Centre' website, his family and various statistics may be found. By the 1841 census he is living alone with his wife Elizabeth in the Hamlet of Venterdon probably semi-retired. William and Elizabeth had seven known children, Elizabeth Rowe Hender who died age 4, Amelia Hender who married Richard Olver, Louisa Hender who died a spinster, a son William Hender who died at age 1, a second son William Worth Hender who became a sadler like his uncle John Hender and married Elizabeth Tresize/Trezise, Thomas Rowe Hender who became a watch and clock maker and married Marianna Trout, and John Hender who died at age 2. Here is a simple pedigree that presents this family and such cousins known of. Some attempt to make a John Hender of Australia to be of this family. There are many henders in Cornwall and of this region and quite a number of John Henders. But I've found no connection for a John Hender to this family and William Hender's will only names his four children as William Worth Hender, Thomas Rowe Hender, Louisa Hender and Amelia [Hender] Olver, as well as his wife Elizabeth Rowe. Those so inclined to find the Australian John Hender's parentage and family will do well to look to St Cleer and William Hender the shoemaker and his wife Elizabeth JANE.

To begin with the death of William Hender my 3rd great grandfather, the watch and clockmaker of Callington. And when one counts backwards from 1848, the year of death, one comes to 1788 as the year of birth/baptism. As his business is declining, likely due to the cheap machine made mass produced Ameican watches, William and his wife retires to the Venterdon Hamlet in the Stokeclimsland Parish. As to why is a question, but there is a Rowe family also living on the Venterdon Hamlet street and William's wife is Elizabeth Rowe. There might be a connection there?

William Worth Hender and Elizabeth Tresize/Trezise Family

As detailed above, William Worth Hender is the son of Elizabeth Rowe and William Hender, watch and clockmaker of Callington, who in turn was the son of Thomas Hender and Sarah Adams of Altarnun. William does not appear at home in Venterdon on the 1841 Census with his parents as he is at perhaps a cousin's household, Richard Garland, at Coads Green, North Hill learning his future trade as an Apprentice Saddler. There with him, which suggests the family relationships from one of the Peter family marriages with Garland, is Uncle-in-law Samuel Peter at age 55+, a confirmed bachelor. William is likely right at age 20 even though up to age 24 would be rounded down to 20 by the 1841 Census rule of thumb of recording adult ages (age 15 and older). Because the casual genealogist does not take the time to sort through the 'four' Hender and Peter family marriages which occur in the family of Thomas Hender and Sarah Adams adequately, including other such related family marriages of that Hender family and the two involved Peter families, the finer details often slip through their fingers. Some attempt to make this William Hender the son of Thomas Hender and Jenney Peter, but that William Hender whose baptism was 6 April 1822, was dead and buried at age 2 month on 11 May 1822. The presence of Uncle Samuel Peter with William [Worth] Hender ought to have been the hint that tied William to being possibly NOT the son of Thomas Hender and his wife Jenny, theirs was the one Peter-Hender marriage that was NOT of the family of Richard Peter and Elizabeth Turner. John Hender, who married as a second marriage to Jenny (1798) Garland nee Peter as her second marriage had no children by Jenny at their elderly ages. The only younger William Hender this could have been is William Worth Hender son of John Hender's and Thomas Hender's other brother William Hender the watch and clockmaker of Callington. Understand? If not study the two Peter families and the one Hender family, their marriages and family relationships until you do or just take my word for it. I know. The life records of William Worth Hender are further exhibited hereafter which confirms that he did become the William [Worth] Hender, Saddler, which other all to often confuse into being someone else. I'll start by giving his simple one child pedigree below and then I'll further begin with the clipping hereafter shown of the marriage between him and Elizabeth Tresize of Devon as the family's further details and documentation is also given below (Its Genealogy by the numbers, dot to dot, and ass-u-mptions not made but deductions solidified from the facts of the matter).

                                            Am[e]ilia Louisa Bennetts

The telling item which clearly identifies this William Hender as William Worth Hender is the fact that his father is named as William Hender, Clockmaker. It seems on such records the 'middle' given names are often not included. On the marriage record entry for Philip Trout Hender, he also is but recorded by name as Philip Hender. So it is not surprising that his uncle's marriage record also does not have the middle name.

For a time, after his father's death in 1848, William Worth Hender and family lived at the residence in Venterdon for it had been left to William Worth Hender and his brother Thomas Rowe Hender. Thomas Rowe Hender had previously vacated to live at East Looe, the home town of his wife Mary Aina Trout who he married in 1844.

By the time of his death, William Worth Hender had located at Callington.

Though Richard Olver is said to be of St Martin, Looe on the marriage entry, on all census records his place of birth is named as Morval. It is therefore considered that at the time of the marriage Richard had mover to East Looe and St Martin Parish as that is also where his residence is at on the census records as well.
