Question of the day: "What is it called when one company monopolizes a market?" Isn't 97% market control a MONOPOLY? Disney, the parent company of ABC and ESPN, controls the College Bowl Broadcast Market. Thirty five bowl games, including the new Championship Bowl games are on ESPN exclusively. Three games are on ABC public access TV, but still Disney controlled. And only one game is on CBS—the Sun Bowl on December 27. Only the Citrus Bowl in January is on 'free' public antenna TV - ABC. Happy New Year from Disney and ABC everybody. NOT!!!

{A market share over 75% constitutes a monopoly}

~ 2014-15 UPDATE ~

The 'Monopolistic Strangle Hold' on National NCAA Football held ILLEGALLY by EPSN continues. Out of the 38 regular season ending Bowl and the 'National Championship' game, of those 39 games, ESPN monopolies 38 out of the 39 games including the Bowls involved in the championship playoffs and the National Championship Bowl Game itself. You might as well call the entire Bowl season including the farce-iful National Championship the ESPN College Bowl Season and the ESPN (NOT NATIONAL) College Championship. Of the 39 games, 38 or 97.4% of those games are being broadcast by ESPN and/or ABC, ESPN's affiliate. The only national college Bowl game that is being broadcast by a 'none' associated ESPN network is by CBS—the 'Hyundai Sun Bowl' featuring Arizona State and Duke is the only Bowl game NOT associated with ESPN. And even though three more games are on National Broadcast Television, to be enjoyed by the American Public, making a grand total of 4 (10%) games out of the 39 total College 'Bowl' Season games, ESPN is keeping the whopping majority of the College Bowl Season games (35 of 39 or 90%) to be only seen and available on 'PAID TV' - that's ESPN ONLY! That includes all of the traditional New Years day bowl games with the sole one exception that ESPN has left to public viewing on affiliate ABC of the 'Citrus Bowl' featuring Missouri and Minnesota.

Just think of an America that is having to 'pay' an average of $100 a month to get televised football games. Antenna 'free' TV is relegated out of existance and Americans are paying to allow a $$$ driven company like ESPN to program their entire lives away. Could/Is happening today? Or why not just add it to our national tax bill and nationalize television via cable etc. and have done with it?

I'm old enough to remember the days when all of the College Bowl Games were free on National Broadcast television to all of the National Public without today's outrageously high 'PAID' and 'Cable Television' addition cost to the American public just to watch their favorite Bowl Season Bowl Games. Gone are the days when such 'freedoms' existed in America. Today there is NOT any real NCAA in charge of its American College Football. It is being driven and dictated by such as what is best suited to the Bowl Championship Series has but grown stronger in dictating matters with the added powers of the College Football Playoff with who but at the controls than ESPN, who is the broadcasting benefator of the whole of it.

The problem is, in the 'old system', every school had some access of consideration. But that is just too many teams to be covered by just 'ONE STATION'. So the entire 'latter-day' movement has been to discredit all but the 'most important' money making Eastern and West Coast teams into a ONE STATION's manageable number of schools of the 'CFB NATION'. Of all the nationwide Football conferences 'worthy' of listing, only 10 are now left and a number of them are being threatened out of existence with no level of national recognition at all. Today's fate of UAB will, under the current trend, likely become a familiar happening. Either the schools will 'disenfranchise' themselves entirely out of having a football program or they'll have to disappear in to 'Division 1-AA class of obscurity to a mere meager championship playoff of just the 'second-rated' schools of American's pretend Division I schools. And perhaps there will be a dividing into an 'A' class, 'AA' class and the current 'AA' class going to 'AAA' class school still under the pretended Division I group. And those now ignored conferences of the 'American Athletic Conference', the 'Conference USA', the 'Mid-American' Conference, the 'Mountain West' conference, and the 'Sun Belt' Conference. And the 'BIG 12' conference to survive will have to add two teams and divide itself into a two sector groups like the SEC, ACC, BIG 10 and the PAC 12 or even worst, be swallowed up by those four so as to make it one nice 'College Football Playoff' package made to suit the 'running monopoly' of the ESPN 'PAID SPORTS' network. Who do you think is behind the real push to have 'amateur college athlete' become 'PAID' athletes anyway. And then American would have two professional football team organizations, the College Professional Football (CPF) to go along with the NFL, for the after college professionals.

So much for talking about all that is wrong with ESPN's illegal monopoly of 'PAID EXTRA for VIEW' football and American today. To bad some 'Anti-Monopoly' legal suit is not taken against ESPN for all the damage they are causing and doing to amateur college athletics and its negative effects on what ought to be the Academic Institutions of our American society. Talk about the commercialization of Christmas if you will. But lets ignore the illegal commercialization for the all mighty ESPN $$$$ that's occurring to our Colleges and Universities. What NCAA? It ought to be labeled what it is in terms of Football, the ESPNCAA and have done with the whole illegal dirty matter of it all.

Note: The FOX network, once a member of the BCS, no longer broadcasts any College Division I-A Bowl games at all under the 'new system' of the College Championship Playoff System. And NBC has also been closed out entirely from any such post season College Bowls as well. How CBS managed to get 1 game, I'm not sure. But look to it going to all be 'PAY for VIEW' and 100% monopolized by ESPN to come, that is if you think it's not already.

one man's view - drh

     What has happened to America's Sports? They are no longer America's and you can no longer enjoy a college bowl season on national television unless it is the Mountain West's hosted bowl game in Las Vagas and ESPN has designed to ellminate that as one of the national conferences NOT to included in National Championship consideration in the up coming 'College Football Championship Playoffs' sceme of things. So what is happeing to our nation's college sports, well the long and short of it is they are being controlled and monopolized by ESPN. And not only are they MONOPOLIZED in broadcasting the games but how they are POLITICIZED and CONTROLED by ESPN to ESPN's benefit and not as to the national good of America, American College Sports, Amereican Higher Education Systems or the American public. Cable TV is okay if that is what you want to pay for - that is 'PAY FOR TV'. But now I can't even get a national Football Bowl game on Television without having to sign up for 'cable TV' and ESPN. All the BCS bowls are ONLY on ESPN. And 95% of all College Bowl games are on ESPN and no where else. THAT IS A MONOPOLY.

And that is NOT all that ESPN is bringing into national collegiate sports. Have you browsed 'images' with your internet browser lately? Just type in 'ESPN' and see what images you and your children will get for 'ESPN Sports'. What you get is 'NUDITY', 'NUDITY' AND MORE 'NUDITY'. What a thing to put before our national youth's eyes who are interested in sports!!!! So all young americans who what to become athletes are to be exposed by ESPN to such media hype that their 'college sports' are to be filled with 'NUDITY'! What an uplifting image to put before America's youth. Don't even expect to play on a college's woman's soccer 'football' team without expecting to be a part of 'PUBLIC NUDITY'! This is exactly who we DON'T want governing College Atheletics. ESPN has one upped Sports Illustrated's Swimsuit issue with 'NUDITY' - 'Move Over Playboy'.

And then there is the issue of who is really in charge of college sports now day's. Is the NCAA really governing college sports? Or is ESPN governing College Sports and the NCAA in the wake of it all. Just consider the whole BCS and next the college football playoff system around the corner and ask who is behind it pushing and shaping college sports and in the process telling college football to consolidate its 'National Title' conferences to the elimination of much of the Universities in many central and western states in favor of a solid 'BIG EAST' (if not SEC) monopoly on who not only qualifies for the major bowls but who may even be considered for the national championship. It is a real killer for 'National College Sports' and Higher Education Universities to be so monopolized and controlled by a commercial entity such as ESPN. With such in charge we'll soon have no 'national sports' just commercialized selective professional sports in local colleges and universities through out the country.

And one other little matter. Just when did college sports become the central driving cause behind Higher Education? Once it was a privlege to receive a college sports scholarship and be 'blessed' to play college sports. Now it is 'pay me' for playing, pay me for using my name, pay me and allow me to be a professional in my sport even while I play my sport in my effort 'supposedly' to primarily get an education. If a college student who plays college sports whats to turn professional in there sport, then let them drop out of college and do so. Don't let the SPORT become the driving force of the amiture attlete. If they what to be payed for their 'sport' let them find a professional team who will draft them and have them quit school. Baseball drafts out of High School as does basketball. Why do football players have to rely on college sports to be drafted? Will they don't, at least they don't have to graduate, they can declare early and drop out. So if the 'college athlete' is no 'BIG NAMED' then let them drop out of school at least team wise and sport wise and go professional 'ALL THE WAY'?

Oh? So they can't make it professionally without playing college sports? Well right there is the benefit in it self and they aught not be paid to get the benefit of being on the college team. ESPN and its fully fledged devotion to comercialism and the mighty dollar in monopolizing sports broadcasting has placed entirely not only the 'WRONG' spin on the matter, but totally an 'UNHEATHY' attitude toward life in general.

What else? Will when the 'National ESPN Sports Scene' is more into the sport than to protect a person from sexual assualt, enstilling in the college athlete that it is alright to not only be immoral but to brake the laws of the land in the process, then it is high time to desolve this MONOPOLY which is so pointedly running College Sports in Amereica today. Return College Sports to more diversed broadcasting over the national air ways. Bring back local college sport interest to the local College communities where they are housed. Let them see 'their' local college teams play on television without having to pay 50 to a 100 dollars a month to subcribe to a cable television network just to get ESPN which is the ONLY place to see any BCS bowl game and 95% of anyother college football bowl game as well. Just when did our college sports become the exclusive property of ESPN?
