Scantelbury of Altarnun
The name of Scantelbury is in itself quite and enigma. Because the name has three
sylabols and each sylabol has a number of used spellings, it become quite common
to have the name spelled differently almost on ever record that a family's records
are found in. The first sylabol 'Scant' has at least four spellings of 'Scant,'
'Scent,' 'Skant,' and 'Skent.' The seond sylabol has commonlly three spelling with
possibly more of 'tel,' 'tell,' and 'tle.' And then the last sylabol has two common
spellings with possible other variations as well such as 'bury' and 'berry' to
start. So each time a cleric spells or transcribes the name, there is always the
likelihood of it being spelled differently. Take the family of William Skantellbury
and his wife Lovday/Loveday for example:

The Will of Lovday Scantelbury of Altarnun 1745
IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN. I Lovday Scantelbury of the parish of Alternun in the
County of Cornwall widow being perfect of memory Blessed be to God do make and
Ordaine this my last Will and Testament in manner and form as followeth
FIRST I Bequeath my Soul into the hands of Almighty God my maker and Redeemer and
my boddy to Christian Buriall
ITEM I Give unto Emblin Hancock my daughter my Best Stees to be delivered in one
month after my decease.
ITEM I Give unto Ebbett Hender my daughter One Shilling to be paid in one month
after my decease.
ITEM I Give unto Joan Scantelbury my daughter in law Ten Shillings to be paid in
one month after my decease.
ITEM I Give unto Emblin Coumb my old Gown and Coat and shift.
ITEM I Give unto Joan Saunders my second best Gown and large Coat and shooes to be
delivered in one month after my decease.
AND all the rest of my Goods Quick and Dead Chattels and Credets I Give unto
Christopher Edgcombe and William Edgcombe, sons of Christopher Edgcombe deceased
whom I make my joint Executors to see my body Christianly Buried and all my Debts
and Leggases well and truly paid.
