William Hender and Selina Toms History [By the Numbers - Dot to Dot] compiled by Don R. Hender William Hender was the second son of Thomas Rowe Hender and Marianna Trout. He married Selina Toms (certificate shown below) and they eventually had 6 children, Adela Hender, William Hender, Maria Toms Hender, Harry Hender, Charlie [Charles] Hender and William Toms Hender. The second child, William Hender, was born in 1881 and died in 1886. Since William was/is a strong family name, when a 'caboose' son was born in 1890, they named him William Toms Hender in order to keep the name 'William' alive in the family. Maria Toms Hender also died very young (4), which left but 4 child who survived and lived to adulthood and married. Adela was the eldest child and Harry was thence the eldest son with brothers Charlie and William Toms. The three sons, Harry, Charlie and William Toms Hender all at one time migrated to the United States. Harry would end up principly in Utah betwix Ogden, Utah and Montello, Elko, Nevada and Ruth, White Pines, Neveda (both were on the eastern borders of Nevada and associated with the railroad that crossed the northern end of the Great Salt Lake from Ogden, the nearest major city of size. Those 4 children and their particular histories may be treated on separate pages for certain family interest. My second great uncle William Hender was the second son of Thomas Rowe Hender, a watchmaker, and his wife Mariana Trout (Mary aina being spelt variously on various records). There was also one daughter, Ellen Hender who married a Toms also, but of a different Toms line that was Selina. There were also two other sons of Thomas Rowe Hender and Marianna Trout named Thomas and Harry. They died in very young childhood. Philip Trout Hender, the eldest son, was my ancestor and his information and history is included on those page which deal with my direct line ancestors. I will now proceed to give the history of my 2nd great uncle, William Hender, has may be presented and deduced from the various records availalbe to my research and understanding. His real birth date is 20 July 1890, he listed it as 20 August 1887. It would have been quite difficult to go through all the 'parental' approvals as I believe that his parents William and Selina were still living back in Cornwall, England. Hender Ordy S. 21 Love Cornwall [William Hender Orderly Single 21 Looe Cornwall] This is William Hender the son of Thomas Rowe and Mariana Hender born in 1850. By age 21 he is enlisted in the Naval Service. Later after a time being a 'fisherman', he will then enlist in the HMS Coast Guard and later in life he will be an employee, a Caretaker, of the Post Office in St Austell. A run down of he occupation of his childrens' baptism parish records and the related census records help to solidify the story. 1881 Census - of West Looe Page 1 Folio 78 William Hender's Family Living at Havenford Lane as Seaman's Wife And William Hender Seaman Presumed as At Sea 1891 Census - of Polruan Page 7 Folio 78 William Hender of Coast Guard & Family Living at 56 West Street with son William being deceased and New Son William [Toms] Hender And Daughter Maria Toms Hender Not Living Long Enough to be on Any Census 1901 Census - of St Austell Page 26 William Hender of Post Office & Family Living on Hotel Road Harry Hender not at Home and Other Three Living Children Home A Visitor from America It would have been sometime during the span of time from 1907 to 1909 that William and Selina Hender, living at Watering Hill, St. Austell would have received a visit from William Hender's nephew, Albert Hender from Layton, Utah. Albert had been called to serve an LDS Mission for his church to England. Though the family records do not detail the exact events of the visit, the imagration ship manifest references Albert's Uncle William Hender of Watering Hill, St. Austell as being his nearest relative living in the country of England. And thus Albert knew exactly who his Uncle William Hender was and were he was at the time living when Albert was there in England.
